He was born on January 18 in Huși. Orphaned by his father, he attended the classical gymnasium “Anastasie Pann”, from Huși (1897). He obtained a scholarship and enrolled at the School of Fine Arts in Iași (1903-1908), in the class of the painter Emanoil Bardasare. He painted churches in Agăș, Asau and Gherghița (1908-1911). He was appointed drawing teacher at Alexandru Ghica High School in Alexandria (1912-1920).

He left for France, to Paris, and enrolled at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, after which he rented his own workshop in Montmartre (1912-1913). He returned to the country in 1913.

Octav Angheluță (b. May 3, 1904, Brăila, Romania – d. November 17, 1979, Bucharest, RS Romania) was a Romanian painter, emeritus artist (1954), university professor at the “Nicolae Grigorescu” Institute of Fine Arts, Bucharest.

“Octav Angheluță’s works are recognized by their exuberant chromaticism and balanced structure, but especially by their sense of humor”, noted the critic Adina Nanu in the catalog dedicated to Octavian Angheluță.

He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest in 1928.

The painter Octav Angheluță was the founder of the Association of Romanian Painters and Sculptors, together with Lucian Grigorescu, Dumitru Ghiață, Alexandru Moscu, Ion Țuculescu, Alexandru Ciucurencu, he was the director of the State Art Gallery and professor at the painting department of the Nicolae Grig Institute of Fine Arts. Pan Ioanid – Portrait of an old man

The son of the painter Gh. Ioanid, Pan (1878-1956) continued his father’s artistic tradition.

Known for “Hore”, weak in value, it also has national museum canvases.

Alexandru Ciucurencu (1903–1977) – Self-portrait

Alexandru Ciucurencu studied painting at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest (1921-1928), where he had as teachers George Demetrescu Mirea and Camil Ressu.
He was a post-impressionist painter and influenced Simon Hollogy and Sorin Adam.
He made his artistic debut at the Bucharest Official Salon in 1930. After working for a while with the group of artists from Baia Mare who formed the group of the same name, he studied at the Julian Academy in Paris and in Andre Lhote’s studio.
In 1948 he became a professor, then editor at the Nicolae Grigorescu Institute of Fine Arts in Bucharest.
Exultant colorist in an initial phase evolved into a more refined palette, a concise design and geometric compositions.
In the first period of creation he painted mainly still lifes, nudes and landscapes, which stand out through color harmony.
Ciucurencu changed his theme by composing compositions with historical or social subjects.
He won awards – Labor Order 1948, Master Emeritus of Art 1956, Ion Andreescu Award 1956, Star of the Romanian People’s Republic 1959, People’s Artist 1964.
He was a teacher for Traian Bradean, Horea Paștina, Mircea Deac, Constantin Piliuță, Spiru Chintilă.

The portrait is from his first period, more faded colors, chromatically poor work.
It uses the contrast of red and green complements, in this way it also emphasizes the center of interest.
The figure is treated with simplicity, presenting a slight geometrization of the shapes.

Dimitrie Serafim (1862–1931) – Portrait of a young man

Dimitrie Serafim was a Romanian painter.

His father, Anton Seraphim, a native of Varna, was a church painter, as were Dimitrie’s two brothers.

He first studied in Bucharest, between 1882 and 1888, with professors Theodor Aman, Gheorghe Tattarescu and C.I. Stăncescu and then in Paris, at the Julian Academy, from 1888, with family scholarships.

After participating in the first Romanian Art Salon in 1892, he received a scholarship in Paris, studying again in the French capital, this time with Gerome and Henner.

He worked a lot using the impressionist technique, under the influence of painters Gheorghe Tattarescu and Nicolae Grigorescu. His studies in Paris influenced him and he turned to large-scale academic painting, especially addressing mythological compositions, but also small works on various topics.

When it was launched, Dimitrie Serafim was considered a young hope. His academic style gave him back. He was not an innovator and did not experiment. He became a mediocre professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bucharest, where he taught since 1901.

Half-profile portrait, without hands, the character being placed in the center of the composition. The treatment is realistic, with shadows and colored grays.

Eustatiu Stoenescu – The portrait of Lady Nanu

Eustatiu Stoenescu studied at Julian Academy and the National School of Fine Arts in Paris with J. P. Laurens, with whom he collaborated on the execution of upholstery and wall decorations.
Stoenescu painted scenes of genre, landscapes, dead natures, but was especially a virtuoso portraitist, exceptional by the gift of laconic expression and by the abstract, solemn, but not without expressiveness.
He was a cosmopolitan, refined and arrogant character. He got in touch with the paintings at the age of 15, when French painter Leopold Durangel (1828-1898) comes to his father’s home to make his mother’s portrait.
After visiting the retrospective exhibition Nicolae Grigorescu, opened in 1897 in Bucharest, at the Romanian Athenaeum, it is irreversible to follow the same path.
He went to France together with Nicolae Titulescu and studied art.
At the beginning, the subject was Grigorescu’s tributary, gradually Stoenescu broke away from any influence and he built a highly personalized style.
